 Yeye's Academy: AfroLiteracy Digest

Weaving ancestral wisdom with modern possibility to nurture culturally grounded readers, thinkers, and families.

September 2026 Edition

"It takes a village to raise a child."

The Village Meets Us Where We Are

A mama called me recently and said, "I'm sorry I'm reaching out so late. Sometimes it's just hard to plan ahead."

I understood completely.

Because homeschool life is still life.

Plans change. Scholars' needs change. Opportunities appear. What worked last month may need shift this month. And sometimes, we simply realize we need a little more support than we originally planned.

But that is one of the beautiful things about having a village: you don't have to have everything figured out before you reach for support.

At Yeye's Culture Academy, we have intentionally built our community with that understanding that our classes, curriculum, learning marketplace, educators, resources, and community experiences are different ways families to reach into the village and find what they need for the season they are in.

So as you move through this month's newsletter, think of it as a little village marketplace of its own.

Take a look around.

You may find a class your scholar needs, a resource that makes teaching easier, or simply an idea that reminds you that you don't have to carry every part of the homeschool journey alone.

Take what strengthens your village-- and come back whenever you need us.

 "Yeye" means "Mother"

Have you ever wondered why we’re called Yeye’s Culture Academy?

Yèyé means “mother” in Yorùbá.

And from the beginning, Yeye’s Academy has been rooted in what happens when we bring that nurturing, village-centered spirit into education: Care. Culture. Concern. Collaboration.

We believe our scholars deserve more than classes. They deserve a village of aunties, uncles, elders, educators, and culture bearers who can pour their knowledge, gifts, and wisdom into them.

That’s the heart of Yeye’s Academy curriculum pedagogy.

So, homeschool families and collectives, tell us:

If you could add one auntie or uncle to your homeschool village, what would you want them to teach or bring to your scholar?

Meet some of the Aunties in our Village

The Marketplace is Always Open !!!

Homeschooling is a living, breathing curriculum—rooted in culture, community, and the wisdom each person brings to the circle.

Maybe your scholar needs an auntie for literacy, an uncle for math, or a culture bearer who can bring learning to life.

That’s the beauty of the village. You don’t have to do it all alone.

And because learning doesn’t follow just one calendar, our academic marketplace  is open all year long for you to chooose :

  • One class.

  • Several classes.

  • Curriculum.

  • A homeschool collaboration.

  • Or a broader Virtual Academy experience.

You keep the freedom of homeschooling. We help you build the village around it.

Watch our Meet the Aunties video and see if one might be the next addition to your homeschool village.

 Marketplace Freebies

Looking for books that center Afrikan and African Diasporic voices, histories, cultures, creativity, and experiences?

Mama Kemi’s Melaninficent Book list is a FREE curated collection of culturally affirming books selected to help families and educators build libraries where our scholars can see themselves, discover their history, explore the world, and grow as readers and thinkers.

Afroliteracy™ Toolkits

Our Afroliteracy™ Toolkits are culturally grounded graphic organizers and learning tools designed to accompany Mama Kemi’s Afroliteracy™ curriculum—but flexible enough to stand on their own.

Perfect for homeschool families, educators, co-ops, and collectives, they can be used with the books, lessons, and curriculum you already love to help scholars organize their thinking, strengthen literacy skills, and make deeper cultural connections.

 Closing Groundings

Sometimes homeschooling can make us focus on what we don't have.

"I can't teach that subject."

"We can't afford that program."

"I don't have enough time."

"My scholar isn't there yet."

But what CAN you do?

You can start where your scholar is. You can use the resources already around you. You can reach into your village for the gifts you don't carry.

You can try, adjust, and try again.

Our ancestors built, created, taught, preserved and dreamed-- even when the resources available to them were limited. That same spirit of resourcefulness and possibility belongs in our homeschool communities.

We wish everyone a wonderful school year!!!!!

Have an amazing school year!!!

See you for next month's newsletter.
